USDA COVID Q&A Update

FNS published Questions and Answers for the Child Nutrition Programs during School Year 2020-21 - #5 memo which clarified, among many things, reimbursement options for virtual and hybrid school aged learners in child care.

Q. May school-age children who are attending school virtually and who also are enrolled and attending child care during the day receive meals through both CACFP and school meal programs?

A. Yes. Students enrolled in both school and child care may receive meals through multiple child nutrition programs. However, state agencies must have an integrity plan with appropriate measures in place to ensure that program accountability is maintained and that program meal limits for the SBP, NSLP, and CACFP are not exceeded.

Summer Food Service Program Extended

USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is extending a suite of nationwide waivers for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and Seamless Summer Option (SSO) through the end of 2020, or until available funding runs out. This includes:
  • Allowing SFSP and SSO meals to be served in all areas and at no cost;
  • Permitting meals to be served outside of the typically-required group settings and meal times;
  • Waiving meal pattern requirements as necessary; and
  • Allowing parents and guardians to pick-up meals for their children.

Pandemic Response: Alpha & Omega Nutrition Program

As a sponsoring organization, we are encouraging family day home participants to become emergency locations to generate income, build relationships, and serve more children. We encourage Child Care Centers to participate in Grab and Go meal service to feed children at home with parents due to loss of jobs. We have encouraged At Risk Afterschool programs to serve meals and snacks to children in and around their community and to seek to partner with larger organizations to serve 'free food' in a drive through with Grab & Go. ~ Shedron Davis
