November is Native American Heritage Month. Celebrate the occasion with various CACFP resources that feature crops that are central to the Native American Diet and find activities to honor the history and heritage of native tribes.

Wild rice has long been a staple of Native American diet, especially among the Ojibwa, Chippewa, Menominee, Cree and Sioux nations. Try out this hearty and comforting recipe that also features ground turkey and fresh vegetables.

Crookneck Squash Row


Squash is one of the Three Sisters of Native American agriculture, along with corn and beans. Learn about the benefits of Crookneck Squash with this activity-filled resource from USDA, and hold onto this guide until the warmer months when you can plant your own squash. In the meantime, look out for delicious winter squashes, such as acorn, butternut or spaghetti squash.
